چکیده

ne of the most unexpected new applications for wide swath synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is the monitoring of atmospheric expressions of storms over the ocean. SAR has an advantage over many sensors because it can pass through clouds and take images at any time of day. However, since SAR’s detection capability is based on the modulation of the sea surface wind field, it can only observe storms over water. Hurricanes and other mesoscale storms are easily detected with existing observations, but SAR can contribute fine-resolution low-level information that cannot be seen below the cloud deck with other sensors. Using Radarsat-1, we have imaged three hurricanes during the 1998 season. Two SAR images of Hurricane Bonnie separated by 1 day are presented, and observations from the SAR data are discussed. (

Ocean Feature Monitoring with Wide Swath Synthetic Aperture Radar

y providing better spatial coverage, wide swath synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can offer a more complete picture of various mesoscale ocean features. With better temporal coverage, SAR also supplies crucial information for the tracking and monitoring of these features using, for instance, the technique of two-dimensional wavelet analysis. Examples presented in this article of fronts in the Gulf...

Rapid-Repeat SAR Imaging of the Ocean Surface: Are Daily Observations Possible?

he fine resolution of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) yields exciting views of the two-dimensional ocean surface and its interactions with the atmosphere, long waves, and currents. However, the high data rates and power required to achieve this fine resolution limit the available swath widths and hence the temporal and spatial sampling of the ocean surface, in turn limiting SAR ocean observation...

Toward an International StormWatch Using Wide Swath SAR

12 Wide swath synthetic aperture radar (SAR), exemplified by the multibeam ScanSAR modes of Radarsat, can potentially deliver global near–real-time coastal wind fields with nearly 2 orders of magnitude greater spatial resolution ( 300 m) than conventional (active or passive) scatterometers ( 25 km). But this superior resolution comes with caveats. An understanding of the small-scale ocean scatt...

International Policy on Wide Swath SAR Ocean Weather Data

ignificant benefits of wide swath synthetic aperture radar data for ocean weather observations have been demonstrated in principle. However, several obstacles must be overcome for this application to achieve its full potential as an operational system. Three themes emerge when considering these obstacles: data utility, data supply, and data policy. This article provides a summary of these issue...
